Guwahati, Oct 28: Tensions have escalated between the controversial group Bir Lachit Sena and local authorities following the arrest of Rantu Paniphukan, the group's Chief Secretary, by Dispur Police on Monday evening. This incident occurred shortly after he was detained during a press conference held at a hotel in the city.
Paniphukan organized the press briefing to address allegations against the organization, particularly concerning the detention of five members accused of kidnapping a businessman and demanding a ransom.
The press conference was also a response to recent comments made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who hinted at a potential ban on the organization.
According to eyewitnesses, police intervened unexpectedly during the conference, escorting Paniphukan out amidst protests from his supporters. He was subsequently taken to Dispur Police Station for questioning before his formal arrest.
He is expected to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court soon.
Police sources have indicated that Paniphukan's arrest is closely tied to the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping, given his prominent position within the group.
In response to the arrest, Shrinkhal Chaliha, the administrative secretary of Bir Lachit Sena, issued a strong statement condemning the government's actions, claiming they are attempting to silence the organization.
“We will not accept this arrest under any circumstances. Despite my declining health, we are prepared to protest if necessary,” Chaliha asserted.
He warned that the group plans to organize statewide protests against what they describe as a politically motivated crackdown on their activities.
Additionally, Chaliha announced the suspension of Bikash Axom, a Sena member, from all duties in Kamrup district while an internal investigation into his alleged involvement in the kidnapping case is conducted.
In a related development, Chief Minister Sarma held a video conference on Monday night with Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) across Assam to assess the current law and order situation in the state.
Paniphukan's arrest has intensified political tensions, as police continue to investigate the alleged kidnapping and scrutinize the internal operations of Bir Lachit Sena. Authorities have not dismissed the possibility of further arrests as the investigation unfolds.
